carole lombard. an american heroine. upon the outbreak of WWII she pitched in heavily supporting the cause. she'd often pestered her husband, clarke gable to enter the armed forces. he demurred. she toured the country promoting the sale of war bonds. after a week-end in indiana where she gathered in over a million dollars she was flying back to LA and her aircraft slammed into a mountain (due to wartime 'lights out restrictions'.) she died in the crash w the crew, her mother and her manager. her husband entered military service shortly thereafter.
